I have been taking an 8 week Beginning Wheel Throwing class at Georgie's on Thursday nights from 6-8 pm. Because it is a bit of a drive, and traffic on I-5 north can be stalled, I've been leaving school at 3:30 and going directly up to Georgies, getting a head start on my work. I missed the second class due to a bad cold, and have only 2 more classes remaining. Last Thursday (Feb 12) was our last day to throw (boo hoo!). Next Thursday I'll have 5-6 pieces to glaze and 8 pieces to trim and add slip or handles to. On the last class we'll have a potluck, and glaze the remaining pieces (to be picked up later). I plan to take the intermediate class in this series, even though I can surely use a year's worth of simply throwing bowls and cylinder shapes everyday. I was 17 when I first tried throwing on the wheel, and 48 when I picked it up again, I never took a formal course until now. There is much to learn. I love throwing on the wheel, it's a kind of alternate yoga for me. I wonder how long my pieces will last, how many years they'll be in use after I'm long gone!
